There Was Such a Glory: A Harriet Tubman Triptych

by DeMisty D. Bellinger

III: Nurse Cook Spy

On the deck of the gunboat,
did she wear a dress such as
those women wore in that
era? I imagine she wore boots
blacker than her skin, but
just as well-worn and ready
to carry her. Did she smile as
the iron-clad boat traversed
waters deceivingly calm? Did
the men look to her as leader?
Did she look at them as her men?
Was she, before going into battle
and freeing even more
a nurse to the Union soldiers?
their cook? Was she, even then,
spying?
